BMW 340i Reliability

Once upon a time, BMW stood alone as an unparalleled driving experience in its class. Now however, competitors have begun climbing and threaten to knock BMW from its lofty perches.

The B58 engine has proven a welcome upgrade over its predecessor, the N54. But has its improved reliability been sufficient to restore BMW’s reputation?

BMW 340i reliability can be questioned by BMW drivers. While there are many profitable features of BMW 340i, there are also some essential considerations for BMW 340i reliability.

Engine

The BMW 340i adds an engine with more power to its 3-Series sedan lineup, making it more competitive with C-Class, Audi A4, and Jaguar XE in the junior executive market. Though its current generation G20 model may contain minor flaws, overall this car deserves consideration when making decisions in this segment.

The 3.0-liter inline six delivers both effortless performance and refinement, thanks to its ZF eight-speed automatic transmission paired with its new version. Generating 320 horsepower and 330 pounds-feet of torque to its rear wheels (or all four in xDrive variants). We have always found BMW cars one of our favourite commuter cars; the 340i is no exception; with its adaptive suspension and steering systems you can tailor its ride for optimal relaxation or entertainment depending on your mood.

BMW is currently undertaking a significant drivetrain overhaul and it may take time for that change to filter through to America. Meanwhile, the 340i remains an outstanding choice with its fuel-inline-six engine that’s both smooth and responsive when driving around town; yet can handle hard acceleration with ease.

The BMW 340i can reach 60mph from rest in just over five seconds and cover a quarter mile in 13-14 seconds – impressive times but bear in mind that tire condition, road surface conditions and transmission all impact performance. This is a great feature for BMW 340i reliability.

For those who seek more excitement in driving their vehicle, BMW offers a performance package which features lowered suspension and the M Sport steering wheel and interior. This upgrade improves handling ability while making driving even more engaging; in addition, this car includes all of BMW’s 3 Series driver assistance features such as Driving Assistant Professional with Steering & Lane Control Assistance which we consider one of our favorite semi-autonomous functions on the market.

Transmission

BMW’s turbocharged inline-six engine is an absolute powerhouse. Generating 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, the BMW 340i can accelerate from zero to 60mph in about 4.6 seconds while posting impressive 1/4 mile times.

Traditionalists will appreciate BMW’s optional six-speed manual transmission, featuring a dual mass flywheel and rev-match during downshifts. Our tester was fitted with BMW’s optional Adaptive M Sport suspension that firms up for extra dynamic handling in Sport+ mode while remaining comfortable for UK roads in Comfort mode.

Steering is another strength of the 340i, boasting precise weight and feel while steering assist technology fell short of our expectations, with several drivers in our office finding it unsettling at highway speeds in straight-ahead positions. Getting the best BMW 340i reliability depends on quality transmission systems on your car.

The BMW 340i comes equipped with comprehensive safety features, such as automatic emergency braking and active cruise control, in addition to its 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and DAB+ digital radio. BMW also provides peace of mind by offering its Service Inclusive maintenance package which covers five years or 80,000 miles, providing oil changes, air filter replacement and inspections at no additional charge.

Brakes

The BMW 340i shares its platform with the 335i sedan and coupe, but BMW rebadged both as M3 when they switched over to modular B-series engines in 2016. Both models provide outstanding performance from the factory; however, with the latter providing greater handling and tuning due to its more advanced B58 engine.

The B58 is also more efficient, thanks to its closed deck block that facilitates cooling for consistent power delivery under load compared with its older 335i counterpart, N55, which tends to heat soak during extended drives or high-speed maneuvers. This feature makes the newer vehicle much better. It can be claimed that brakes are not dramatic factor for BMW 340i reliability.

The 340i xDrive uses an intelligent system to maximize traction by constantly monitoring road conditions and driving style. By default, its torque split is set at 40% front to 60% rear – although its instantaneous ability to switch back and forth between axles in milliseconds makes for excellent rain-soaked roads or mountain driving conditions; it doesn’t do much to improve cornering grip, however. Some testers complained of its stiff ride while the leather-wrapped bucket seats have hard leading edges on thigh support that hurt short legs causing discomfort on shorter legs.

Electrical System

If you’re in search of an advanced BMW 3 Series vehicle, look no further than the 340i. Its luxurious cabin is packed with high-end features that will make you feel as though you are driving something much more expensive than itself.

This BMW was also built with safety in mind. It boasts an extensive suite of driver assistance systems to keep you and your passengers secure on the road; such as lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and rear parking sensors.

An ignition coil failure may cause your engine to begin misfiring, leading to loss of power or stalling. If this appears to be the case for you, have it replaced immediately – any delay could lead to more serious complications down the line.

Body

The BMW 340i boasts an enjoyable, compliant ride that absorbs bumps and potholes without choppy handling, with its xDrive system vectoring torque to help navigate curves more effectively. Unfortunately, however, its counterparts in Mercedes-AMG C 43 and Jaguar XE S offer superior grip on skid pad tests as well as being more engaging to drive at high speeds; its steering feels dull off-center; furthermore its lack of connection to road also hinders agility. Body does not come up as an issue for BMW 340i reliability.

The interior of the BMW 340i is well-appointed, with its premium audio system featuring 16 speakers. There’s also a panoramic sunroof available along with various driver assistance features and BMW offers an optional Service Inclusive plan that provides five years of maintenance and roadside assistance.
